Urban Homesteading

Attack of the Fruit Flies

Last weekend’s canoeing trip on the Buffalo River meant that our friends took us to the Amish farms right down the road. We came home laden with fresh, local honey, cantaloupes, bell peppers, blackberries, green beans, and potatoes (!)

Unfortunately, the fruit flies decided to stow away and make a new home in our kitchen.

Were they not happy on the farm?

There are a few words that come to mind when I think about the swarms of those little creatures flying around in my apartment……

Disgusting.

Revolting.

Nasty.

You really should have seen us standing in the kitchen trying our absolute best to swat at them and smack them when they landed somewhere (to no avail I might add….)

But then I learned a great trick! I poured a small amount of apple cider vinegar in a dish, mixed in a few drops of dishwashing soap and placed it on the counter.

The fruit flies didn’t flock to it immediately, but they were attracted to it, and as such, stayed away from my head for the most part. Eventually, the majority of the flies crawled right in it and died!

So much more effective than our futile swatting and smacking attempts.

Do you have any other home remedies for fruit flies or bugs in the kitchen? Feel free to share them!

I think I remember one time I opened a bottle of sour mix and they all went in there and died. Or maybe they multiplied…. I can't remember too well.

Glad to hear the remedy worked! Bleck, I hate fruit flies. But I guess no one really likes them, haha. I'll have to keep that remedy in mind!

Home Remedy For Ants In House: Mix a bowl of grits w/ a bit of sugar. The Ants will be attracted to the sugar and in return will bring the grits to the queen. She will not be able to digest the grits and will therefore die, killing the entire colony in the process. This has worked for me many times in many different homes!
