Laurel of Leaves

getting back to my roots: my journey in true health and natural living

Musings

A Glance in the Rearview Mirror (May 2012)

The month of May was filled with drinks here. I’m talking super healthy lemonades and tea mixed or brewed with gourmet flavors and sweetened with natural alternatives to toxic refined sugar. What, what?! Yes, folks, summer is indeed upon us, but never fear the heat and humidity. Rosemary Lemonade, Plum & Thyme Iced Tea, and Strawberry Lemonade are here to rescue and refresh.

Healthy Tea & Flavored Lemonades

I also shared another ‘food on your face’ beauty tip that I use every single day — an Apple Cider Vinegar Facial Toner. Many of you commented on this post with some other great uses for ACV, one of which is a hair conditioner. I’ve been doing this as well for the past month or two as part of my ‘no ‘poo’ and ‘sorta ‘poo’ regimen. I’ll be working on posts soon sharing what I’ve learned about natural hair care, so if you have any specific questions, leave me a comment below!

Getting My Book On

Vintage Remedies Guide to Real FoodIt’s been a busy month teaching BarreAmped classes, working at Vintage Remedies, and attending the MORE+ conference at my church over Memorial Day weekend, so I’m falling behind yet again on my reading goals and the list of books I want to read just keeps getting longer and longer. But I did manage to finish The Vintage Remedies Guide to Bread (fascinating!!!) and I’m currently reading The Vintage Remedies Guide to Real Food. I’ll be honest. I started reading this book only because I am now working for the company and I wanted to make sure I was well versed for the job. Plus, it’s always nice to get a refresher course on the basics. That being said, even with an extensive background in ‘real food’ and nutrition, I’m still learning all kinds of great things from this book! Jessie Hawkins knows her stuff and she is SO thorough in her research. Even if you’re not a real food newbie, you will still learn heaps from this book. Plus it’s a fantastic reference tool since the entire second half is a glossary of real foods and their nutritional content, many even complete with recipes.

I’m definitely looking forward to reading more next month since I’ll be going to the BEACH for 4 days in June!

Free Vintage Remedies Conference

But before I can dig my toes in the sand and soak in the sun at the beach, I’ll be presenting at the Vintage Remedies 2012 Virtual Conference! We are offering free teaching sessions Thursday – Saturday, June 7 – 9, on topics like ADHD, aromatherapy, natural fertility (Donielle from Naturally Knocked Up is presenting in conjunction with her book release!), stress, and teaching kids about healthy living, as well as hosting a Facebook Party Friday night with heaps of giveaways, discounts, and a really big announcement that we’re all super excited about!  You can register for my Summer Locavore Challenge presentation either on Friday at 10:30a CDT or Saturday at 3:00p CDT. (Register online here.)

What did May look like for you? What are you looking forward to this summer?
